This standard is about all the things you need to know to do your job as a foster carer safely, and not to put yourself, your family or the children and young people you look after in danger.
It is also about providing ‘healthy care’.
You will be expected to understand health and safety laws and regulations as they apply to your role as well as the policies and procedures of your fostering service.
You may be expected to undertake specialist training, for example, to help a child with a specific health need.
You will be expected to demonstrate that you have an understanding of the health care needs of children and young people, how to promote healthy lifestyles, and what to do in case of accidents or illness.
You will be expected to assess potential risks and understand how to manage challenging behaviour in line with the guidance provided by your fostering service.
